After Spring Break we are diving into Ancient Rome. The kids are really excited about it and several of them have said that this is the unit that they have been waiting for. Greece has been a mess because of Snow Days and we didn't really get in a "good" project that was fun and creative. We were looking through files to see what we could do for Rome. We wanted to give the kids an opportunity to work on something that was out of the box. We are having them concentrate on people.

We were looking at this choice assignment (that I love, of course):

Roman Unit Project Due Date:
Create a Powerpoint/Prezi/Glogster highlighting one Roman Emperor. Be sure to include at least 10 slides with photos on at least 6 slides. Highlight his achievements while emperor. Choices of Emperors: Augustus, Claudius, Nero, Hadrian, Marcus Aurelius, Trajan.
Create a map of the Roman Empire, highlighting the four phases of expansion. Have a map key/legend that shows the map reader what your map is representing. Have a title for your map. Use color; make the map very eye catching. You may create on the computer or on a poster board.
Act as though you are the newly appointed governor of a Roman Province. Research the date when Roman acquired this province. Also, research the leader of Rome at that time. Write a letter to the leader of Rome detailing what your province has to offer Romans and how you plan to establish and maintain order. (You probably want to ask the Roman leader for military to be sent, etc.) Letter may be typed.
Film yourself reporting “live from Rome.” Research one important historic event in Roman history. Prepare a written transcript (must be turned in with project). You may have a friend/sibling help you if you want. Report what the newsworthy issue is and leave your viewers with a well-prepared report. Suggested topics: the colosseum is built, Caesar is murdered, Augustus first emperor, Pax Romana.
Create an “Emperor’s i tunes playlist.” Select one of the emperors from box 1. Select 5 important events during this emperor’s reign and select 5 songs that would match that achievement. Also, prepare one paragraph each (total of 5) that explains each achievement and why you selected the song you selected. Songs must be school appropriate.
Create 5 political cartoons on the Roman Republic/Empire. Remember political cartoons do not have a lot of writing (a few words max). Your reader should be able to look at your cartons and understand quickly what part of Roman life you are being satirical about. You may complete one cartoon with a minimum of 6 frames or 5 separate cartoons.
Create a Facebook/twitter for a Roman Emperor or leader (can be a military leader). Be sure to create a page that people want to view (make it interesting, with pictures, etc.). Send me the link or print a copy to show. You may add me on twitter and that way I can view your completed page. You Roman leader must have at least 10 updates/tweets about important events that happened during their life/reign. Facebook/twitter pages must be appropriate for school.
Create a PowerPoint about the history of the Punic Wars/Roman Republic/Empire. Be sure to include at least 10 slides and 6 photos. Highlight the accomplishments of Rome during the time period you select. Focus on important events.
You are a tour guide in Ancient Rome and need to prepare an awesome tour for your arriving guests about Greek and Etruscan architecture in Rome. Select at least 8 places to show your guests. You may create a PowerPoint/Prezi/Glogster.

We decided that we wanted the kids to do the Facebook/Twitter Project for a famous Roman.

Once again, I love the choice that COULD take place here. We decided for this group that the Facebook/Twitter would be well structured and we'd rather have all the students focus on one topic (influential Romans) than the choices offered here. World Fit has got us buggin.

If given the opportunity, (ie not 2 weeks behind because of snow and no 25 minute World Fit walking time) we would have definitely given this as a choice assignment, instead of just picking one for them...

Carpe Diem
